Then, he's offered a job by the mayor, billionaire real estate developer Dennis Van Wervel, to complete an anthropological survey of the people of Simplicity for a history museum he's financing. A wary Lucius is nevertheless drawn in by the people of the small wooded community, intrigued by its strange rituals and in particular by the charming acolyte Amity Crown-Shy. Whiz Comics issues #25 (December 1941), #33 (August 1942), and #35 (October 1942) follow the series' tradition of blending thrilling super-hero exploits with humor and moral lessons. At the forefront is Captain Marvel, the principal protagonist, who faces off against a range of adversaries, defends the vulnerable, and fights against malevolent forces. Throughout these narratives, Captain Marvel harnesses extraordinary abilities bestowed upon him when he utters the enchanted word 'Shazam!', metamorphosing from the youthful newsboy Billy Batson into the formidable super-hero.
